Napper Architects Celebrates 80 Years of Design Excellence
This year, Napper Architects are incredibly proud to celebrate our 80th anniversary. Founded in 1946, our journey has always been guided by a fundamental philosophy: putting people, collaboration, and sustainability at the heart of everything we design.
From our studio in Newcastle, we have spent the last eight decades delivering transformative architecture across the UK. Whether working in sensitive rural landscapes or bustling urban centres, our goal remains the same—to design inspirational, sustainable places that respect their context and community. We are responsible for designing and renovating some of the North East’s landmark buildings including Sunderland Winter Garden, Newcastle Law Courts, Alnwick Garden Treehouse, Tees Barrage, Dalton Park Outlet Centre, the historic Seaham Hall, and the grade I listed Newcastle Theatre Royal and Alnwick Castle.
Our recent portfolio highlights this ongoing legacy of excellence:
- Civic & Commercial: Darlington Economic Campus at Feethams House and the new Service Headquarters for County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue.
- Heritage & Conservation: The grade II listed City Baths in Newcastle and the award-winning Morpeth Railway Station restoration.
- Infrastructure: The new concourse, interchange and multi-storey car park at Darlington Railway Station and the redevelopment of the grade II Seaham Harbour.
- University: Cornell Quarter for Teesside University and the refurbishment of Northumbria University Library.
- Net Carbon Zero: North Shields Transport Hub.
Beyond the buildings we design, our biggest milestone has been our people. Transitioning to an Employee Ownership Trust has allowed us to empower our multi-talented workforce, ensuring our creative, client-first approach remains the foundation of our studio for generations to come.
As we enter our ninth decade, we are looking forward. We remain deeply committed to meeting current architectural challenges, blending design innovation with actionable strategies to combat climate change.
Thank you to our clients, partners, and dedicated team who have been part of our story since 1946. Here’s to the next chapter!
