To bring this famous Grade 1 listed Theatre into the 21st century, the largest expansion in its 170 year history was undertaken providing improved public realm to house a new Box Office, Bistro, Restaurant and Education space, all providing an additional 1400m2 of floor area.
The first phase of the project was an extension to the stage area and took in complete renewal of the flying system and access into the fly tower. The second phase was the public elements behind the retained historical facade on Market Street with the final phase being the office accommodation above phase 2 and Link bridge across an internal courtyard. All of the construction work took place without any unscheduled breaks in the Theatre Royals performance programme.
