Sunderland Winter Gardens
The new Winter Garden is located within the historic Mowbray Park Conservation area of the city and is linked to the restored Grade 2 listed 19th Century Museum & Art Gallery. Within the large glazed dome structure visitors can enjoy large scale tropical planting, streams, pools and a central water sculpture. The building uses the natural elements and passive design to create environmental zones ranging from desert, tropical and temperate.
The scheme was part of the £13.5 million Lottery funded Winter Gardens, Museum and Park. Alongside numerous design awards, it is cited as an exemplar cultural building by CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment).
