Shepherd’s Quay
Shepherd’s Quay is a residential development of 49 apartments and one town house on the historic Fish Quay in North Shields overlooking the River Tyne; it replaces the derelict North Eastern Rubber Company building that stood on the site.
The development comprises three separate blocks which step from 2 storey (adjacent to the neighbouring existing building) to 4 storey in height, and all apartments have views towards the Tyne. The site benefits from being located on the inner curve of the river and as a result gives impressive views both upstream and downriver as well as to the southern bank side.
The design provides a contemporary response to the historic setting. A simple palette of materials, which includes facing brickwork, rainscreen cladding and full-height glazing complements the surrounding properties. The site lies partly within a conservation area and the design required close consultation with the planning authority and Historic England.
Built by Meldrum Construction Services, the project was funded through a joint venture which brought together private developer UKQ Clive Street with Next Level Developments (the commercial development arm of Karbon Homes) and the government’s Homes England agency.
