Proposals for Seaham Harbour have been developed in phases with the aim of boosting local enterprise, sustainable economic growth and employment, increasing visitor numbers, and creating a more positive image to residents and visitors. The project involved far reaching public consultation (in particular with Friends of North Dock Seaham) and it was recognised that the future of the dock would only succeed through a social, working and functioning facility.
Phase 2b included the restoration of the old lifeboat house, the creation of an interpretation area and provided new public realm works and railings to provide safe access to the marina. The existing lifeboat house was dilapidated and had been over rendered in a Portland cement render. The existing render was carefully removed to allow for a detailed joint inspection with the conservation officer to agree the extent of masonry replacement. Externally and internally the walls were re-pointed with a lime mortar.
To avoid the need to provide excessive additional secondary and primary structure to the building a lightweight stainless-steel standing seam roof was installed. The proposed roofing is a roof covering with a bespoke narrow-gauge profile to match the original. This allowed for the maximum retention of the original timber which was cleaned and treated for fungal and insect attack. The existing windows were carefully removed and refurbished off site prior to re-installation.
The project continues the focus of providing heritage-based tourist attractions and marine activities as the basis of the redevelopment of Seaham Harbour.
