Napper Architects were appointed by Lugano Developments Ltd to design proposals for three adjoining residential plots in Darras Hall, 12km north west of Newcastle. Each property is three storeys in height and is divided into two wings around a central circulation and entrance area. The living areas take advantage of the gently sloping site and enjoy views to the existing woodland and river to the north west.
Traditional materials are used in a contemporary manner. The contextual setting requires careful articulation of the massing and materials; each element of the properties is distinct to visually reduce the overall mass.
The designs utilise sustainable technologies and integrate into the landscape. Formal gardens incorporating terraces and hedges are proposed adjacent to the houses with a more informal design incorporating wildflower meadows to the northern part of the site close to the woodland and river. Surface water drainage comprises a network of rills into rain garden areas capable of capturing storm event capacity.
