Hexham Town Centre

Hexham

Napper Architects were appointed by Advance Northumberland to developed proposals for four potential redevelopment sites in Hexham town centre: the car parking on Maiden’s Walk; the former bus station; the former Ropery building; and the former Beales store.

A review of the parking provision in the Maiden’s Walk area of the town was carried out and options put forward for re-aligning the surface parking and for a single deck car parking arrangement linking to the town centre via the former bus depot site.

Overlooking the car parking is the grade II listed former Ropery building which has been vacant and in a poor state of repair for a number of years. Proposals were developed for the conversion and adaption of the building to accommodate four residential units.

Following the completion of a new bus station the former site has been vacant since 2017. Proposals were developed for a mixed-use scheme for the site and adjacent vacant buildings. Car parking was provided at basement level, retail units at ground floor and elderly care residential units at first and second floors.

The former Beales store is on the corner of Fore Street and Priestpopple. Proposals were developed for new retail units over two storeys accessed from two intersecting covered arcades. The arcades provided key pedestrian links between the main shopping streets and existing car parking.
