Planning Application submitted to transform Darlington Railway Station into a regional transport hub

Napper Architects have submitted a planning application for Darlington Station East Gateway. The proposals include a new station entrance and concourse to the east side of the railway tracks incorporating ticketing, waiting and retail areas. This will complement the existing grade II* listed station building which will be retained and refurbished as part of the overall masterplan. The proposals also include a multi storey car park, which brings together the current dispersed parking arrangement in one location, and landscaped public realm incorporating passenger drop-off and cycle storage.

The proposals will allow for new platforms and tracks which will improve the frequency and reliability of services along the East Coast main line encouraging use of the public transport system and establishing Darlington as a regional transport hub serving the Tees Valley and the wider catchment including South Durham and North Yorkshire. Completion is planned for the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 2025, recognising Darlington as the birthplace of the modern railway.
