Construction work starts at 156 Northgate in Darlington

Work to redevelop the grade II* listed former home of the prominent Quaker Robson family in Darlington starts this week.

Funded by the Government, the project seeks to transform the neglected four storey building on Northgate into high quality office space for small businesses and bring more jobs to the area. Bought by Darlington Borough Council in June 2023, the building is a key development within a wider scheme of work to regenerate the town centre and plans to breathe new life into the Northgate Conservation Area.

Construction company Compass Development NE Ltd, which has extensive experience across the North East, will carry out the construction, which includes alterations to allow level access to the building, a new internal ramp and the demolition of a conservatory and external staircase. Updates to mechanical and electrical services are also planned and the building will benefit from new finishes and decoration throughout.

Despite having numerous owners, uses and alterations over the years, the building has retained many features, and promises to offer superior office accommodation for businesses looking to start, grow or relocate in the area. The development will be completed by the end of the year.

“I am very excited that work is starting on this important project which is a key development in our plans to transform Northgate and promote social and economic growth in the area.  Darlington is a town on the up and more businesses are looking to invest here. Having the right infrastructure in place to support small business development is essential and will help us to regenerate a part of the town which has been largely neglected for too long – creating more opportunities for local people and businesses, improving the area for residents and visitors, and driving footfall into the heart of the town centre.”
Councillor Chris McEwan, Cabinet Member for Economy, Darlington Borough Council
