Seaham Watersports building is part of the Seaham Harbour Marina Phase 3 works within the award winning North Dock Harbour development. The project has been awarded the 2017 Regional RTPI special “Chairs” award and has been shortlisted for the National awards in 2018.
The £900,000 project continues the employment-based regeneration of the dock area, supported by Durham County Council and the Coast and Community Fund. The building was designed to suit the sensitive nature of the site and to consider the positive short, medium and long term public sustainability benefits arising from the project. This included the balance of economic, social and environmental objectives and, the clients desire to address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The centre will be able to facilitate water sports and a range of other sporting activities, with the ambition to expand its offer to include community and educational courses in the future. The client believes the addition of the water sports activity centre will also attract additional visitors to the Marina throughout the year and help to maintain footfall during typical downtime periods.
Graeme Dodd, Project Director at Napper Architects, said: “This brings the total number of awards to 12, which is almost unprecedented and evidences the value of long term client relationships.”
